Chettie Bews is back and better than ever!

After losing 20 pounds over maybe 2 months, and visiting 3 different vets, Chet is putting weight on and is again her snappy little self. Well, really, she never lost her sparkle.....she just got alarmingly thin.

We’d visited a great vet in Costa Rica who diagnosed hookworms and began to treat Chettie. We were relieved when she seemed to be gaining weight over the next couple of weeks.

We had to update all of her paperwork and vaccinations for the flight to Colombia and for the Colombian customs process. We took her to a vet in Panama City and this vet proclaimed her parasite free. Phew!

But then in Cartagena we noticed she was getting thinner and she wanted to eat everything in sight, not her usual MO. I emailed the vet in Costa Rica who advised us to get her to another vet right away. I remembered this woman telling us there were good vets in Colombia and I hung onto this thought as we began the process again.

The vet in Cartagena was also a kind soul. She did many tests and determined that Chettie still had parasites and had a blood disorder. She began treating Chettie and, like all vets, told us what a sweet dog she is. This was during Semana Santa, Easter week, and when I expressed gratitude to this vet for working during the holiday she smiled and said, ‘It’s my career’. Clearly, she was dedicated to helping animals regardless of the day.

The treatment was fairly involved, including shots on 4 consecutive days, two different kinds of pills, and then two other shots once-a-week for 6 weeks. We are in week 4 of this series and have two more weeks to go.

We can see how much more robust Chettie is from just two weeks ago and the scale confirms she has put on 5 pounds.

She absolutely loves our Zona de Camping compound and since we´ve been here for 2 weeks she thinks this is where we now live.

  1. So happy to hear this news! Zora said she is happy for Chetty but jealous that she looks so good! We walked by your house today and Zora cried to go up to the door. It looked good but not like when you and Mike were there. Has the brother with the parts arrived yet? When does the great overhaul begin? What are they going to try to do? Will Chetty require any more treatment? Miss you a lot!
